Softlock Fixes Guide

Content note

Alien Invasyndrome is an adult stealth-action Demo (Steam app 4603980). Softlocks here means gameplay state traps and recovery—not story content. Brief 18+ notice: mature themes exist; this page stays mechanical.

What “softlock” means on this wiki

In the Atlas Demo, players say softlock for several different problems:

  1. Desk hide trap: You entered cover under a desk and cannot cleanly exit.
  2. Detection wait mistaken for a freeze: You are in the ~1 minute penalty window and the game is intentionally limiting useful actions.
  3. UI/language confusion: Japanese UI without Locale Emulator looks like missing prompts.
  4. True state stick: Camera, interact prompt, or movement stops responding across multiple rooms.

Diagnose before you restart. Many “softlocks” are stealth recovery doing its job. Read Stealth and Detection if you have not internalized the penalty window.

Fast triage

Ask in order:

  1. Were you just detected? If yes, hide and wait about one minute. Use Detection Timer so you do not quit at 40 seconds.
  2. Are you under a desk or similar cover? Follow the desk exit sequence below.
  3. Can you open menus but not read them? Fix language tooling via Locale Emulator.
  4. Does movement fail in more than one room after a reload of the segment? Treat as a true stick and use the hard recovery ladder.

Desk softlock recovery

Desk softlocks are part of stealth design on Atlas. They save runs in Clinic, Security, Cafeteria, and other furniture-heavy spaces. They also strand players who mash interact while a patrol occupies the exit tile.

Recovery sequence:

  1. Stop mashing. Let animations finish.
  2. Wait until the nearest crew leaves the exit tile. Peek logic from Stealth and Detection still applies.
  3. Issue a single exit/cancel/interact input according to your How to Play control scheme—do not chord three keys.
  4. If the camera stays clipped, open and close the menu once to force a camera refresh when the Demo allows it.
  5. If you exit into immediate detection, re-enter cover and accept the penalty instead of sprinting.
  6. Only after two calm attempts should you reload the segment.

Prevention:

  • Assign cover with an exit vector before you hide.
  • Do not desk-dive in Laboratory long sightlines unless you already know the return timer.
  • Avoid nesting that ends facing a blocked desk exit.

Room context for furniture density: Key Rooms.

Detection penalty mistaken for a crash

Symptoms: prompts feel useless, crew stay alert, nesting fails immediately, you assume the build broke.

Likely cause: confirmed detection and the about one minute recovery tax. Correct play is hide-first, not nest-first. Pair with the Detection Timer until the duration is instinct.

If the alert never decays across multiple quiet minutes and multiple rooms, escalate to hard recovery.

Locale Emulator and “missing” actions

The Demo may present Japanese UI. Without Locale Emulator, players misread cancel/confirm and report softlocks that are actually wrong menu choices. Setup notes live at Locale Emulator. Fix language before you file a mental bug report against Security Route A.

Hard recovery ladder

Use this ladder only after triage fails:

  1. Cancel/holster/idle: Return to a neutral stance for ten seconds.
  2. Menu refresh: Open map/pause if available; close it; test movement.
  3. Room transition: Leave to another Atlas deck door (Top/Middle/Lower) and return.
  4. Segment reload: Reload the Demo checkpoint or restart the room approach.
  5. Full Demo restart: Last resort after a true stick across rooms.
  6. Patch check: Compare your build notes with Changelog in case a known issue exists.

Do not skip from step 1 to step 5 because Security felt scary.

Room-specific softlock notes

Security Room

Cameras plus desks create false sticks when you exit into a cone and immediately re-hide. That is recovery churn, not a broken route. Re-commit to Route A or B using Security Room after you stabilize.

Kitchen

Short loops mean softlocks are usually mash-related. One clean cancel fixes most nest aborts.

Clinic

Highest desk density. Peek every exit. Camera clips are more common; try menu refresh before reload.

Laboratory

Long sightlines make players hide longer than needed. Use the detection timer so you do not sit forever thinking you are stuck.

Cafeteria

Wide space softlocks are rarer; more often you are simply mid-penalty in open seating. Find edge cover.

Practice so softlocks get rarer

  • Drill desk enter/exit in Clinic before Security mastery.
  • Practice nest abort → hide → resume from How to Nest thinking, even though that page is nest-focused.
  • Learn one control scheme and stop rebinding mid-Demo.
  • Keep How to Play as your baseline if you forgot cancel vs interact.

Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to common Alien Invasyndrome questions.

I hid under a desk and cannot get out. Am I softlocked?

Often you are waiting on a blocked exit tile or mid-animation. Stop mashing, wait for crew to leave, then send one exit input. Use the hard recovery ladder only after two calm attempts.

Nothing works for about a minute after I get spotted. Is that a bug?

Usually no. The Demo uses a detection penalty of about one minute. Hide and wait it out with the Detection Timer before restarting.

Menus look wrong or prompts seem missing. What should I check?

If you need English-readable UI against Japanese text, set up Locale Emulator first. Many false softlocks are mis-clicked cancels.

When should I fully restart the Demo?

Only after triage, desk recovery, menu refresh, and a room transition still leave you without movement or interact across rooms.

Where do I see if a softlock was patched?

Check the Changelog page after updates, then re-test desk exits in Clinic and Security before assuming your save is cursed.
